Bayfield is a picture-perfect heritage village with one of the most beautiful beaches in Canada as its western border, and views from atop the greenery-crested cliffs that make you think the word really is flat and it ends somewhere out there on Lake Huron. This is the spot for watching magnificent sunsets.
In stark contrast to its lively neighbor, Grand Bend, just a bit south on scenic Highway 21, the village of Bayfield is elegant, laid-back and genteel. Main Street is lined with exquisite boutiques and galleries, plus a few shops that sell homemade fudge, ice cream and other confections. Among the superb collection of lodging and dining establishments are two renowned Ontario inns, The Little Inn at Bayfield and The Red Pump, the latter also having an upscale gift shop. For a tiny place, it has everything the discriminating visitor could want.
The Bayfield Beach is really a series of small coves nestled into the curves of the cliffs, protected from all winds except westerlies, and creating what feels like a collection of small private beaches rather than one long strip of public sand.
At the northern edge of the beach is a pier, the lake-end of the harbor that lies on the north end of the village, ideal for fishing, watching boats go in and out of the harbor, or just for stretching out and daydreaming in the summer sunshine. This is where the Bayfield River empties into Lake Huron.
This is a place of festivals, some in the village and some on the beach. Corvette Fest sees sportscars all around town and in the central park called Clan Gregor Square. The Bayfield Fair is held in August, a mix of fun, farm animals and competitions. One of its most famous events is Christmas in Bayfield, held in mid-November, when every business and house in the village gets decked out for the holiday season. Beachside, there is boating, swimming and the very serious summer project of building sandcastles. Shells, interesting small stones and fossils litter the beach, especially near the shoreline.
Bayfield Beach is about comfort and warmth, romance and relative quiet a stone’s throw from fine dining, accommodations and shopping. It’s a world-class place, condensed.
