With a population of 10,300, Bondi Beach is a suburb of Sydney, a popular spot for its residents to take an early morning jog before heading to
work in the city. Its homes and commercial buildings are low-rise and set into the hillside that surrounds the area, giving a sheltered sensibility and mirroring the curve of the beach.
Inspired by “Black Sunday”, a 1938 event where 250 people were swept off the beach and out to sea, but were rescued, Bondi Beach is home to the Bondi Surf Bathers Life
Saving Club, the oldest such institution in the world. It continues to innovate in the areas of life saving techniques and equipment. The beach’s lifeguards, in an effort to
stay fit during the off-season, formed the Bondi Icebergs Winter Swimming Club, and their modern facility is worth a look.
Locals and visitors use Bondi Beach for swimming, surfing, sunbathing and beach volleyball, but there’s more to it than that. Flickerfest, an international short film festival,
runs every January, and Sculpture by the Sea is a highly popular arts event staged each November. The Bondi Pavilion, a cultural center right on the beach, offers a theater and
rehearsal space, an art gallery and artists’ studios, and meeting and conference rooms; it is the main venue for festivals in the area.
Frequented by a large number of British tourists, Bondi Beach is a cherished spot for them to spend Christmas Day! There is superb local shopping on Hall Street, and the area
is dotted with more than 100 vibrant clubs, restaurants and cafés. A children’s wading pool is located at the north end of the beach, so fun can be had for all ages and degrees of swimming expertise.
