A short ferry ride from the mainland terminal at Queen’s Quay and Bay Street is Centre Island, long the hotspot for summer fun and frolic for Toronto’s residents, young and old. Centre Island Beach is adjacent to the pier and island ferry terminal, so visitors disembark and are in the midst of the vibrant atmosphere.
Facing south over Lake Ontario affords open views and cleaner water. At the beach, a rock breakwater has been erected that achieves a number of things: safety for children and poor swimmers, shallow waters for paddling, calm waves and slightly warmer water that is normal in Lake Ontario.
A day on the beach can be more than just sunning and swimming in this lively location. Children will love to visit their turtle pal Franklin (appearing in sculpture form by world-famous artist, Ruth Abernethy) at Franklin Children’s Garden, or hop on the merry-go-round at the Centreville Amusement Park, resplendent with wading pools, games and rides.
There are many eating options here from snack bars to pizza joints to fully licensed restaurants. The Toronto Yacht Club is nearby. The beach is equipped with washrooms, change rooms and showers, right by the pier end of the sand. Enjoy a game of tennis or just relax in the summer sunshine and let the kids splash in the sheltered water. Centre Island Beach has all the options for a great day!
