Among the more relaxed and liberal of the Islamic nations in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates is comprised of a federation of emirates (governed by emirs, hence the name) and Abu Dhabi is the capital, and the second largest.

Corniche Beach is a long, slightly curved stretch of beach that receives sun almost all year, but it gets very hot here in July and August, along with unusually humid summer winds, so a visit to this gorgeous beach and clean, new city is best in other months.

Abu Dhabi is a wealthy, oil-rich city and its beaches are attended by well-heeled tourists and locals alike. Some beach sections are deemed as private, such as the stretch belonging to the Emirates Palace Hotel, and used by its guests. Watch for signs that indicate the beach is private and kindly respect that; there are miles of beach for public use.

Located within close distance of fabulous golf courses, tennis courts, nightclubs, spas, the Khalidiyah Mall, and the International Marine Sports Club, Corniche Beach has a lot to offer. The beach is dotted with kiosks selling light refreshments and there are booths situated at intervals along the length of the beach where you can purchase your tickets to visit. Beach umbrellas, clean public washrooms and a children’s play area complement Corniche Beach.

Shaded by thick, massive palm trees, this beach is ideal for travelers looking to participate in water sports such as snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing. Beach volleyball is popular and there are designated areas for that, set up with nets. On the beach is “Beginners Park” a teaching facility that is open from noon to 6:00 p.m. and teaches the basics of wakeboarding.

Corniche Beach is a luxurious spot in a modern country with a 7,500-year-old history. It’s more formal than some westerners are used to, but it’s also more relaxing and safe. Corniche Beach is the destination for travelers who have done the normal beach circuit and want to experience the height of heat and pampering.
