Gibraltar Point Beach looks out over Lake Ontario, and is situated between Centre Island and Hanlan’s Point Beach. Its sand is thick and soft and it has a genuine peaceful sensibility.
While Gibraltar Point Beach is perfect for summer sunning and swimming, it is better known for other “activities”. Gibraltar Point Lighthouse was erected in 1808 and operated by a bootlegger who sold alcohol to the soldiers in nearby Fort York; his murder remains unsolved, but there are plenty of educated guesses as to how he met his demise. Human bones have been found near the lighthouse, including parts of a coffin. And there have been hundreds of reports over the last 200 years of sounds from within the lighthouse, as well as moaning, footsteps on the stairs and the noise made by dragging something heavy.
The other activity carried on at Gibraltar Point Beach is art and great thinking. A collection of private artists’ studios and retreats comprise the Gibraltar Point Artscape center. Artists, writers and other creative minds work in 35,000 square feet of serene multi-purpose space, and enjoy the benefits and zen of the beach right outside the doors.
Gibraltar Point Beach is vastly different from its next-door neighbor Hanlan’s Point Beach, and it’s the ideal escape from crazy city to beach beauty.
