Formerly called Chicago Beach, after an American company that was based here, Jumeirah Beach is a tourist haven full of sun, sand and surf, all the perfect
elements of a great beach vacation. Because it is situated in one of the more upscale areas of the United Arab Emirates, it is an expensive place to stay, eat and play. The preferred
beach area has an entrance fee and everything from umbrellas to lounge chairs come with a rental charge.
One section of the beach, known as the free beach, has no admission fee, but tends to be inhabited by men ogling western women; this may be uncomfortable for women and their male
companions, but there is no rule that females must wear bikinis. If it’s privacy and peace you want, one of the paid-admission beaches will be less hassle.
Once the bastion of pearl-divers, fishermen and traders, Jumeirah Beach is now home to the wealthy, with single-family homes on huge lots with big price tags making it one of the
most expensive places to reside in the eastern hemisphere; 27,000 people live here.
The hotels are equally high-end, but the architecture is beyond stunning. Two of these hotels were erected on man-made islands, reclaimed from the sea, and as result have panoramic
views of the Persian Gulf from every window.
Don’t be surprised to see camels being ridden on the beach, or soccer games in the sand; this was the host location of the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. A unique attraction close
to Jumeirah Beach is the gilded Jumeirah Mosque; this building is open to non-Muslims for tours, and serves as a center for educating the public about Islam.
