Lucy Maude Montgomery sends her fictional heroine, Anne, of Anne of Green Gables, to Kingsport to attend university (there isn’t one here, but in nearby Wolfville is Acadia University). In the late 1870s this was one of the busiest ports and ship-building centers in Nova Scotia; now one of its most treasured summer cottage locations.

Part of a community of summer cottagers and a handful of year-round residents, Kingsport Beach offers a wide beach with beach-combing enjoyment during low tides and the lazy lap of the seawater when the tide is in. It’s a relaxed and relaxing place to stroll or bask or take a boat ride.

It boasts interesting topography, with a tidal marsh on the west side, and luxurious sandy beaches with southern exposure; the erratic wind occasional makes sand sculptures on the shore. The nearby Habitant River (the mouth of it is here at Kingsport Beach) is another interesting spot to explore with plenty of waterfowl to observe and photograph.

In recent years, a boat ramp and boardwalk were erected, making for a grand walk or a perfect place to launch a small boat or canoe. This is an ideal sport for recreational boating; although the tides can vary wildly, the water currents are reasonable.

A few of the local cottages are rented out to guests and others operate as bed-and-breakfasts. Artists of all descriptions opt to spend quiet time here, writing, painting and composing, in the beauty and peace of Kingsport Beach.
