Because the Mayans believed that the sun rose at the edge of the world, they thought this was where land stopped and no man lived beyond. It became a place of religious significance and worship was carried on as the sun crested over the sea’s horizon each morning. The essence of that sentiment lingers at Playa Bonita Beach.
Described as wild yet calm, private and yet lonely, pristine and almost scary in its silence, Playa Bonita Beach is an incredible place to stargaze at night, if solitude is to your liking. If you stand in the doorway of the remains of the ancient ruin, given clear skies, the North Star is visible. The palpable loneliness suddenly retreats and you sense your place in the universe.
The best time to visit this beach is during the winter; mosquitoes and other flying insects plague Playa Bonita Beach during the summer. And there are no facilities here, no washrooms, no fresh water; if you journey here, be certain you bring all your basic needs, including a garbage bag because there is nowhere to deposit rubbish.
As remote as it is, Playa Bonita Beach is the launch-pad for small kayaking tours of the surrounding sea, a relaxing but adventurous junket. The white sand and rolling, grassy dunes soothe the mind, but like anywhere in Mexico, you need to be vigilant, especially in remote areas. Still, that threat is less so in Cozumel, and Playa Bonita Beach beckons.
