Located where the Chen Rio (River) empties into the Caribbean Sea, this beach has the beauty of riverside gentility and ocean sensibility in tandem. Trees and lush vegetation bend over the flowing river; palms loom over the beach.
Less expensive that its neighbor, Playa Oriente Beach, Playa Chen Rio Beach offers a small crafts shop, and a decent beach bar and restaurant facility, all at fair prices. The beach has ample shade, with lounge chairs beneath, and a decidedly unhurried pace.
A protected cove area, studded with interesting rocks, makes for a sheltered spot to picnic or sunbathe and while away the day in bliss. While rip tides frequent this beach, authorities have cordoned off a specific area that is safe for swimming; stay within that and you and your children will be just fine as you splash and swim in the warm blue waters.
This is not the most popular spot in Cozumel for water sports, and because of that, it tends to be a peaceful, family-style beach with a focus on relaxation and simple play. There are no big thrills or attractions here for children, but it’s a perfect location for family gatherings and one-on-one time.
Because of the river mouth, rainfall can mean pollution from runoff, so check the signs and be sure it’s a good day to swim. If not, there are games to play and suntans to develop on Playa Chen Rio Beach.
